Master Rhee

Chong Chul Rhee 8th Dan is our Master Instructor and head of the Rhee Tae Kwon Do Organisation. During the formative period of the Art of Tae Kwon Do Master Rhee, along with one of his brothers, Master Chong Hyup Rhee, was one of the original twelve Taekwon-do Masters (separate to the members of Kwans training in Arts with other names) that were selected from South Korea’s military to aid in the Art’s development under the founder of Taekwon-do, General Hong Hi Choi.

Mr. Rhee acquired vast experience before coming to Australia in the early 1960’s. He spent three years in the Marine Corps, developing and teaching unarmed combat methods to the Marine Commandos, the elite Commando Underwater Demolition Team, Marine Brigade Headquarters and Marine 2nd Infantry Divisions. The Korean Marines earned a reputation as feared and courageous troops. Nicknamed “The Demon Hunter Marines” they were easily recognised on the battle fields and were the most disciplined, daring and highly efficient elite of Korea’s armed forces.

Mr. Rhee was also a leading Instructor to the Police Force, students at universities and colleges and members of the public. Mr. Rhee then spent some years in South East Asia – including Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Brunei and other countries – spreading the Art of Taekwon-do.
Mr. Rhee established the Art of Tae Kwon Do in Australia as a Master Instructor, sent by the Korea Taekwon-do Association. He taught Taekwon-do to the public for some years before dedicating his efforts to his own School, Rhee Tae Kwon-Do, in 1970. He also opened Schools in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, spreading the Art with the aid of dedicated senior Instructors. Master Rhee still travels to each region, conducting regular Action Days and Dan Tests.

Mr. Rhee has led hundreds of demonstrations across the nation. He’s demonstrated the Art at universities, colleges, Air Force bases, Army and Police academies as well as to the public and Government figures. He’s featured in countless newspaper and magazine articles and brought the spectacular Art of Rhee Tae Kwon-Do to millions of television viewers.

Master Rhee’s dedication to the Art of Taekwon-do and the promotion of Korean culture was recognised by the Republic of Korea in 2003, with the presentation of the Dongbaeg Medal.
